What is Tai Chi?

Overview:

Do you deal with chronic neck and back pain? Or have you been searching for a low-intensity exercise that not only strengthens your muscles but improves your balance as well? A tai chi class with us might be just what you need. Here’s what you should know about tai chi and how it can benefit your body and overall wellness.

What is Tai Chi?

A form of mind-body practice, tai chi was originally developed centuries ago in China. Most commonly called a moving meditation, tai chi uses breathing, focus, and slow movements to improve your wellness and treat several health issues. While originally developed as a form of martial arts, today’s method of tai chi is very relaxed and can be practiced while standing, walking, or even seated. As it’s low-intensity, tai chi can be performed by people of all ages and fitness levels and, over time, improves your range of motion and can enhance your mental and emotional well-being.

What Are the Benefits of Tai Chi?

Quite a bit of research exists about the multiple benefits of tai chi. Regular practice of tai chi can:

  • Improve sleep and cognitive function in people with Parkinson’s
  • Reduce pain caused by osteoarthritis, neck pain, or back pain
  • Improve your mood and emotional health
  • Improve upper and lower body strength, including your core

  • Relax the mind and decrease your levels of stress

What to Expect During a Tai Chi Class

If you’re new to tai chi, you might be wondering what to expect during your first tai chi class. A tai chi instructor at Sample Pt/Pain Management will begin the class with a simple warm-up where your shoulders, head, and entire body are slowly loosened up. Special emphasis is placed throughout the class on your breath, keeping you in the moment while still being aware of your surroundings. Some classes may also include a few minutes of gentle breath work to bring your focus back to the present moment and relax the mind. The instructor will then lead you through a series of tai chi movements that are circular in nature. Your muscles during the entire class will always be relaxed and never tensed, while your joints are never overextended or completely bent.
