Aromatherapy

What is Aromatherapy?

Overview:

Have you been suffering from nausea and headaches? Or have you been experiencing a lack of sleep and just need a good night’s rest? An aromatherapy session with us might be just what you need to improve your overall wellness. Here’s what you should know about aromatherapy for functional medicine.

What is Aromatherapy?

Also known as essential oil therapy, aromatherapy is a form of functional medicine that makes use of essential oils to enhance your well-being. The essential oils used in aromatherapy are plant-based and usually derived from flowers, trees, or herbal plants. Some commonly used essential oils include lavender, cedarwood, peppermint, tea tree, and rosemary.

Aromatherapy can be practiced on its own, but you’ll often find it prescribed with other forms of functional medicine such as massages, acupuncture, and even meditation. Aromatherapists or other trained healthcare providers can prescribe the use of essential oils in one of three main ways:

  • Inhalation
  • Oral ingestion
  • Topical application to the skin

What Are the Benefits of Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy offers multiple benefits to achieving wellness within your body, mind, and spirit. Regular use of essential oils can:

  • Improve your mood
  • Decrease anxiety and depression, especially in patients with cancer
  • Reduce headaches and migraines
  • Treat nausea
  • Improve digestion
  • Fight fungal, bacteria, or viral infections
  • Repel insects

Recent studies have shown that regular inhalation of peppermint, chamomile, or lavender essential oils through a diffuser can improve your sleep, decrease drowsiness and lack of appetite and increase your overall well-being.

What to Expect During An Aromatherapy Session

An aromatherapist at Sample Pt/Pain Management, will ask you a series of questions regarding your current health status. Knowing your current symptoms of pain and illness is key for your therapist to better treat you, and your initial session will cover everything from chronic health conditions and allergies to your current environment and mental health. The number of aromatherapy sessions you require depends on your current health and how you respond to the essential oils prescribed. Your essential oil therapy sessions may sometimes be used in addition to other forms of treatment, such as acupuncture or massage.
